New Year—New You
by Joyce Long

Alcohol and drugs (medical and recreational) can overload our natural detoxification abilities, as well as cripple our immune systems, leaving us vulnerable to disease. They can also intensify existing symptoms.

Detoxification, the process of removing toxins and waste from the body, benefits most people. It enhances a greater sense of wellness, increases energy, and clears the mind. Our bodies already have very sophisticated systems to rid themselves of such poisons.

An alcoholic’s system no longer functions without alcohol. Thus, withdrawal must be gradual, or the patient may suffer very severe — possible lethal — side effects. The same is true of all of the other medical drugs to varying degrees.

Patients who get off anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or opioids often experience rebound symptoms and the worsening of their symptoms. To come off such medication, the patient needs to be aided with a specific supportive regimen. Patients also may get withdrawal symptoms when they detox from mercury, Lyme disease or paint fumes. During drub withdrawal, the patient often experiences an exacerbation of the existing symptoms.

Too, for each unresolved psycho-emotional issue, the patient will store an equivalent of toxic substances in the body. These cannot be released unless the psycho-emotional factors are addressed at the same time. Conversely, often patients undergo psychotherapy spontaneously eliminate toxins from their tissues. Hence, a detox program should always accompany psychotherapy.

Specific detox programs include:
1.  Lymph drainage/massage
2.  Ion cleanse hand and foot baths
3.  IV Vitamin C
4.  Inferred Heat Sauna Therapy and Ozone Therapy
5. Colonics
6.  Psychological approaches:
     a. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
     b. EEG Biofeedback
7. Balancing the biochemistry through:
    a. Supplementation
    b. Herbs
    c. Homeopathy
    d. IV Nutrients
8. Manual chiropractic manipulation

Breathing techniques, exercise and the above specific detox program enhance detoxification.
