A Multifaceted Approach: The More Natural Way
to Change Children’s Negative Behaviors

School is starting in just a few weeks and with it new teachers and
schedules. For some parents and children, this is a time of new anxieties.
Will Johnny’s new teacher comment on his behavior? Is this the
year Sally finally gets organized? Will Jimmy be able to stay out of trouble
this semester?

While researchers are trying to determine whether attention deficit
symptoms stem from genetic, emotional, or psychological issues, some
families are finding help in ways other than traditional drug or psychological
therapies. These usually involve the following steps:

  • Eliminating exposure to toxins from internal and external sources
  • Detoxifying the body
  • Rebuilding the body through nutrition
  • Restoring the nervous system, the immune system,
    and the gastrointestinal tract

According to Dr. Kenneth Bock, author of Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies, “all of these steps must be met for recovery to occur.”

Sherri Lund, Naturopathic Candidate and Nutritional Consultant with Bridge to Better Health, has found that positive results can come from implementing these important steps. Clearing trauma sites is important as well. In some cases, she may also suggest other therapeutic options. In her consultations, Lund takes a multi-faceted approach that considers the whole person then suggests a unique set of recommendations formulated to support the body in multiple ways.

West Houston Theosophical Study Center
Presents the Labyrinth

An ancient symbol that relates to wholeness, a labyrinth combines the imagery of the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. As such, it represents a journey to our own center, then back into the world. Labyrinths have
long been used as meditation and prayer tools. The presentation will include information on how labyrinths can be used for one’s personal spiritual awakening.

Sandra Check, speaker, is a CPA, novelist, and Religious Science Practitioner. She started walking labyrinths as part of her spiritual journey in 1999, and made a painted-concrete labyrinth in 2006.

Free and open to the public, the West Houston Theosophical
Study Center meets 2nd Friday of every month from 6:45 p.m. to 8:45
p.m. at the Tracey Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter, Houston
77042-5213. For more information, email Barbara or call 281-556-0686.

Kazakhstan Injustice Gala Inspires Support
B.B. Govinda Swami, who directs the Hare Krishna movement in the former Soviet Union country of Kazakhstan, spoke in Houston on Saturday evening July 7 about persecution Krishna members are experiencing in that largely Muslim country. A renowned vocalist, Govinda Swami and two Kazakh musicians also performed melodious chanting and Indian dance was performed.

Despite protests from human rights groups and several governments, Kazakh officials recently ordered 50 Krishna devotees to leave their legally acquired 116-acre farm and demolished 13 of their homes. The Houston gala, which included a
vegetarian dinner, raised more than $11,000 to help re-locate members in
Kazakhstan to new living accommodations.

Co-sponsored by the Hare Krishna Temple and Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston, the program was attended and supported by representatives of the Houston Interfaith Forum, the Yoga Association of Houston, Yoga for Peace, as well as numerous Indian organizations such as Hindus of Greater Houston and the Durga Bari Temple.

According to Dr. Hansa Medley, outreach coordinator of the Hare Krishna Cultural Center in Houston, those who did not attend the event can still contribute to a special Kazakhstan relief fund by sending a check payable to Silk Road Foundation to 1405 West 34½ Street, Houston, Texas 77018. For more information, contact Dr. Medley at 713-782-2156 or go to Kazakh Krishna to see a video that updates the Kazakhstan situation.

The Rosen Method: A Breath of Fresh Air
Have you noticed how fully babies breathe? Their whole bodies move with each breath. You may have also noticed, that as the child gets a little older, the child’s breath isn’t as full.

Holding back our breath and tightening our muscles so we don’t show how we really feel is a defense mechanism learned early in life – but, oftentimes, this holds us back from living fully and freely. Holding our muscles rigid takes a great deal of energy; it’s exhausting. Plus, this muscle-tension translates to physical aches and pains, as well.

Most of us have long since separated our emotions from our conscious awareness. We live our lives denying those emotions. Unfortunately, denial – however diligently practiced – does not keep those emotional hurts away.

The Rosen Method practitioner focuses on the breath and chronic muscle tension. When relaxation occurs and the breath deepens, unconscious feelings, attitudes and memories may emerge. As this process unfolds, habitual tension and old patterns are released, freeing you to experience the feeling of being more alive, giving you new choices and a greater sense of well-being.

Experience Rosen Method at the September 7, 8 and 9, Rosen Method Bodywork and Movement Introductory Weekend Workshop. You may earn CEUs or attend for your personal growth and interest. Registration is $250; the Special Early Bird Registration fee is $220, if you register by August 17. The workshop will be held at the Carmel Temple, 1208 Pennsylvania Street, South Houston 77587. Please call Patricia Angelina for information or to register: 713-426-3577. Visit Healing Hearts Bodywork.
