Reconnect with Nature’s Nutrients by Foraging

by Carrie Harmon

Living in the fourth largest city, you can easily distance yourself from nature. In the city limits you find everything you can possibly need or want. We are far away from the cavemen days where foraging was essential for our survival. In our current civilized life, we no longer have to grow our own food or even travel a long distance to grab a bite to eat. We value convenience with hundreds of grocery stores and supermarkets in our surrounding area.

It is no surprise that we are accustomed to having the world at our feet and living in the fast lane. Every year our city continues to grow and with our busy life we tend to forget about the simple times. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with technology and fail to appreciate the beauty of nature. Think about how there is plenty to see and do if you just take a moment to discover the open space. It is good for your mind, body and soul to break away from the daily hectic rituals and reconnect with nature. It is hard to believe that out in the wild you can find food, which is one of the most important necessities for survival. Outside, there are fields and forests that can provide you with edible plants filled with rich nutrients.

Foraging for edible plants may not be an easy task, but it is definitely rewarding. You can benefit from the exercise and vitamin rich plants that you find along the way. “Plants found in the wild are free, fresh and contain healing powers. Edible plants that are gathered from foraging are healthier than the food found at your grocery store.” When foraging, it is important to remember that not all plants are edible. Before foraging, you should get familiar with common poisonous plants. Some parts of the plants may be edible while other parts can be poisonous. Overall, respect your surroundings and the plants. It might be a good idea to consult an expert and do your research before eating any plants. With practice, you will soon be able to identify wild edible plants on your own.

Once you know more about wild edible plants, you can cultivate them in your garden for you to use every day. Deer Lake Lodge & Spa, a health resort, uses herbs that grow across the property for its cleansing teas and spa treatments.  “Having our own edible plants on the property allows us to provide our guests with a unique holistic experience. With the use of our edible plants and spa treatments, it’s easier for our guests to rejuvenate and relax.”

Step outside of your comfort zone and explore the great outdoors. Nature’s fragrance of wooded forest and blossoming wildflowers will instantly bring peace.  The possibilities that surround you in the wild will astonish you. Foraging is therapeutic and connects you to nature’s nutrients.
