Disconnect to Reconnect

Disconnect to Reconnect

by Carrie Harmon

All day and even at night, we hear ring, chime, buzz, jingle coming from all our digital devices. I can always find a digital device within arm’s reach of me.  I take my cell phone with me everywhere I go. I use my smart phone throughout the day to make phone calls, send texts, check social media, take photos and browse the web. It is safe to say that my phone and technology in general consumes my everyday life. If I am not on my phone it’s probably because I am on my computer or am driving.

Can you imagine a world without technology or any digital device? How will you ever be able to take a digital picture or check email? If you take a moment, you will realize that using too much technology can be a bad thing. Technology has slowly been disconnecting us from nature and our surroundings. It can even disconnect you from your friends and family. A tiny little screen can have a huge impact on your health and well-being. It is important to give up your cell phone, computers and hand held devices for a day or two. Instead of being on your phone, you can focus on reconnecting with your body, mind and soul.

When you unplug from your digital devices, you will take notice of the world around you and be able to appreciate nature. You will be able to spend quality time with your loved ones, instead of communicating via text message. The time spent on your phone can be used to meditate, read a book or have a real life conversation with your family at the dinner table. When you disconnect, you will begin to reevaluate your lifestyle. Even a quick morning walk without your phone can improve your whole day. Withdrawing yourself from technology can reduce stress and allow you to focus on social interaction in the physical world.

For me, the most ideal place to disconnect is at Deer Lake Lodge & Spa. Imagine a secluded area with a natural backdrop of woods. I am able to get lost in nature and then relax in my guest suite made from recycled metal shipping containers. The facility is designed to shield sound and other electric fields. In this tranquil setting, I am able to experience the open air and its natural healing energy.

A digital detox is essential for focusing on the importance of improving health and feeling relaxed. Unplugging might seem impossible, but it is important to find the perfect place and moment to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with your mind, body and soul.
